43 days after the summer solstice there was a faint gray light in Philadelphia at 8pm. Caroline took Jay-teeth brushed, bear pajamas on-down the hall for a bedtime story. In the living room I cued up the new album by Bon Iver and took Wally in my arms and prepared to rock him down to sleep.
In the bedroom Caroline read, “And an ocean tumbled by with a private boat for Max and he sailed off through night and day.” In the living room the music played “So carry on my dear, what is clear up in the daylight is we’re hung here, fall is coming soon.” Maybe we danced.
After four songs I looked down at Wally against my chest and expected to see him sound asleep. But there he was, eyes wide open, staring into the dim eve. Two songs later I looked down again. This time he was asleep and already I missed him. The music played on. I thought, “I’d hold you until my arms fell off.”
